I disagree, insofar as I was thoroughly unimpressed by American Gods; unless, that is, Gaiman's bona fides as a graphic artist surpass his abilities as a narrator.

"A comic book for intellectuals," according to someone I've never heard of. But it's by Neil Gaiman, so it can't possibly be bad.

Watchmen is tremendous, and I'm glad you read it. I'm very worried that the movie will do it visual, but not intellectual, justice. I'm always interested to hear what non-comic book readers think about it, as I'm sure my storied past with the genre has flavored my appreciation of it.

The three graphic novels that are always mentioned as "The Best" are Watchmen, Maus and The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, which I actually think is in many ways superior to Moore's work reviewed here, although not as vast in scope.

Actually, I've got The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao in my queue as well, though I don't know when I'll get to it.

I liked Soon I Will Be Invincible, but for whatever reason I had a hard time finding things to say about it in my review. Perhaps I'll have to revisit it someday.

I absolutely adore this book. It was the second graphic novel I ever read, so I was by no means a comic book reader at the time, and I only absorbed its comments on (and parallels to) superhero comics history to the extent that I already knew about that history from The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, the book that convinced me to look at comics in the first place. (This was also before Pixar's The Incredibles, which kind of takes a cue from Watchmen as well.)

What I found extraordinary was the detail in the subtle effects of the panel layout, like the symmetry of the "Fearful Symmetry" chapter.

There's a subtle and brilliant homage to Watchmen near the end of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, which I recently read and reviewed. That's well worth a look if you ever get around to it. Looking forward to your review of Soon I Will Be Invincible - it's a little ways down my own list.
