I misspoke- the earliest surviving &lt;em&gt;manuscript&lt;/em&gt; is from the late 3rd century, but the gospel itself probably existed no earlier than 150 and no later than 180. We&#039;re still talking well into the third or fourth generation of Christianity, though, which is one of many knocks against any historical authenticity.</description>

		<description>Bart Ehrman is actually a very compelling scholar, given the right material. &lt;em&gt;Misquoting Jesus&lt;/em&gt; is eminently readable (although his Colbert Report interview for the book was kind of awkward.

Granting any sort of legitimacy to the &lt;em&gt;Gospel of Judas&lt;/em&gt; seems rather silly to me. It&#039;s clearly a Gnostic work of fiction playing off the very conflict of betrayal and omniscience you bounced around when you were young. All evidence overwhelmingly points to it being written 250 years after Jesus died. This is just National Geographic looking for a scoop and trying to play off of the popularity of crap like &quot;The Da Vinci Code&quot;.</description>
