The movie was a yawner. It only flirted with interest in the short fight between two armored ursas, when the Ian McKellen bear knocked the jaw off his opponent, and near the end. The rest of its two-hour runtime was spent managing to be both heavy-handed and elusive in its message. A ponderous film. 2/5.

I will admit I have not read the books... EXCEPT for picking up the third one and perusing it (in Wal-Mart of all places). Perhaps that makes me ill-informed to pen a review, but it does not make me ill-informed to comment on the "fuss."

The climax is the "death" of God. There is no metaphor there; Pullman even refers to God by several other Biblical names. Like I said, it's not a mystery. And not content to "merely" "kill" God, the author uses relatively insulting language as he's doing it. Now, readers may or may not be offended by the words and actions on the page. But I'll brook no half-hearted apologism. It's quite clear what the author intended.

That said, I think the first movie looks entertaining and I will see it at some point. Maybe I have a weakness for armored polar bears; I definitely have a weakness for Eva Green.

I'm curious as to what you'll think of the subsequent books. I thought the first was easily the best, due in large part to the world building Pullman does. He's got a lot of interesting stuff there --the technology, the demons, the tension between Oxford and the church, the witches, the panzerbears. In the next 2 books a lot of that takes back seat to the plot and the themes he tries to build. I wanted the whole thing to be set in Lyra's world.

I read the whole series a few years ago, before there was any talk of a movie, and I thought they were excellent. I never picked up on any strong "anti-God" vibes, although I was younger, I suppose. Still, though - all this hype makes me sick. It's a story, people, come on.
