picayune
adj. Of little value or importance; paltry
adj. Petty; mean

Whereas a picayune used to be a half-cent piece of Spanish origin (I would have guessed some sort of comestible, like pico de gallo), it’s now used to describe something as nearly worthless. I should point out here for the sake of sating the sesquepedalian beast inside me that if you were to call something picayune (pick-uh-yoon), you would be floccinaucinihilipilificating it.

Picayune might sound a little to silly to throw around academically, but it’d be a fun word to insult people with: “Picayune pecker!”
