@Ben: Yes, true. cdda2wav wouldn't solve any of the mentioned problems. I just wanted to mention that grip us by no means tightly integrated with only cdparanoia.

Regarding "no significant [cdparanoia] updates since 2001", from http://xiph.org/paranoia/news.html:

September 11, 2008

cdparanoia 10.2 final released

10.2 is a substantial upgrade release over 10.1.

But why?
cdparanoia
is essentially a more quality-conscious version of
cdda2wav
—switching wouldn't solve any of the problems presented.

you can change the ripper of grip to cdda2wav if you don't like cdparanoia.

Actually, there's a greater number for Windows—CDBurnerXP Pro comes to mind, and I'm sure there are standalone utilities as well.

It wouldn't surprise me if K3B has it and I never found it. Frankly, I don't think a better burning program than K3B exists for any platform.

But then, the ability to rip to ISO isn't as useful without an easy way to mount as well.

K3B has the ability to rip to an ISO file. I use it all the time, and frankly, I've found this a difficult task on Windows, unless I am willing to buy or steal a specialized tool like paid Nero or somesuch. I think there is a 'write image only' option somewhere on the 'start burning' dialogue.

Maybe I didn't look hard enough, but I've always found this to be much smoother on Linux than Windows.

[...] I’d like nothing more than to see cdparanoia up to snuff. I’ve mentioned before that the dearth of decent ripping support is one of the major defecits of desktop Linux. [...]

I should clarify that when I say barely watchable, I mean there's a little lag every few seconds. I do have the libdvdcss2 library and DMA on. I installed Automatix, but I had most of the stuff that's useful to me already installed. I have almost everything working that I want (on the 64 bit version, even), so I'm pretty happy, but surround sound is really what's keeping me from completely switching. It's also not that I can't get all of my speakers to output sound, just that it only mirrors the front speakers, even when playing something like those FLACs I mentioned.

I should mention that gXine actually has a setup wizard that turns on things like DMA for you, which is also nice.

Automatix does a lot to handle many of your problems, Jeff. If you go to www.getautomatix.com and follow the instructions. Running it is a breeze and you can install everything without trouble - it just takes time for the download and install.
