The first time was when he came to the high school, which occurred the second half of our junior year, if I remember correctly. I did get a chapbook, but alas, I did not get it signed. The second time I saw him was when his book was released: there was a celebration/gathering at Lewis University, and Jack was the guest of honor, so to speak. I purchased the book, and got it signed. It reads as follows: "To Adam, May you find at least one thing in here that you like enough to read it to someone you love. Jack McCarthy 04/04/03 (This is the sixth copy of this book that I have signed today.) #6" The third, and final time I saw him perform was in downtown Joliet, at the Potting Place, or Painting Place, or whatever it was called. This was right after high school had ended. Abou was there, and he got to do some flute improv while Jack read "Song of the Open Mike" (I turned down the chance because I'm no good at improv - I wish now I hadn't done so). All three times Jack was extremely engaging, and by the end of each evening, it felt as though that Jack was not a poet, but rather, a grandfatherly figure who had known us all from birth.
