I bought this a year or so ago, and read it this week. I thought it was brilliant, and not in the least bit dry. The extra padding of magical history was great, especially when it offered the "real" explanation for certain English oddities, like the church in Chesterfield which actually does have a twisted spire. The only disappointing thing I can think of was what happened to Lascelles, it seems a tad of a copout. Still, glorious.

Did you know she's got a book of short stories out that expand on this novel with tales like John Uskglass and the Cumbrian Charcoal Coal Burner and another story involving Jonathan Strange? Mind you I seem to remember that you're not a big fan of short stories.

Susanna Clarke was born in Nottingham, you know. Corking place.

You're not likely to find cliff notes for this one. It's too new (2004, I think), and not literary enough. It might like an Austen novel, but it's just sci-fi/fantasy at heart.

Sounds interesting, although I seriously doubt I'd have the patience for it if it's half as dry as you say it is.

I miss out on lots of good books because I have the attention span of a meringue with ADHD.
