		<description>Well, I maintain that if the Bible was made REQUIRED reading- regardless of the institution's intent– some watchdog group would be up in arms.

		<description>If it was approached from a literary or historical perspective, I don't think there would be much uproar at all.  At least, I don't &lt;em&gt;think&lt;/em&gt; there would.  

And anyway, I think the point in this case is to familiarize the students with something they haven't heard.  Just about anybody in America, Christian or not, is somewhat familiar with the Bible.</description>

		<description>I agree with you. I have been reading bits and snatches of the Quran online for a while now, hoping to gain insight. (Overall it is more boring to me than  scandalous, although there are some odd/hateful things to be found. A true Muslim would argue with me on context, although a true Muslim would say it is not really the Quran if it is translated into English. But I digress.)

The kids should settle down. BUT... and don't try to tell me this is not a valid point for argument's sake... imagine the furor if incoming students to a major state university were required to read the Bible.</description>
