New things under the sun

For anyone who has been frustrated by this site as of late, I apologize. The server move was a bigger deal than my host had thought. To illustrate the quandry, let me explain a little something about DNS.

The big companies in the internet business have DNS servers, which point domain names (such as heliologue.com) to an IP address. Theoretically, every service provider (in my case, Comcast, or you might be using Roadrunner, or SBC, or, god help you, AOL) should be refreshing their DNS information often, so that when domains are created or switched to new IPs, that information is distributed quickly, and Joe Q. User sees the site from the new IP address as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, a lot of service providers are lazy bastiches, so generally, DNS refreshing across the board takes 24-48 hours. What has happened is, as in the case of my good friend Abou, he logged into heliologue.com to write blogs, not knowing that he was accessing the old server, but after the data had been transferred over to the new server. So as soon as www.heliologue.com started pointing to the new server/IP, the data he created during that time was no longer accessible. And now the old server isn’t available anymore, so unfortunately that data is gone for good.

There are still little quirks to iron out, as all of the services and things are reregistered following the move. Please bear with me; I know it’s an inconvenience.

In other news, I am in the middle of installing a new webmail module that looks to be considerable more attractive/functional/editable than the current module (Squirrelmail). As soon as this is up and running, I will let you know.

Should any of you wish to forego webmail entirely and use a desktop client, such as Outlook, Eudora, or Thunderbird, you can access your POP3 mail account with the following information:

name: youremail@heliologue.com (you must include the @heliologue.com)
password: your password
outgoing/incoming server: mail.heliologue.com

Any requests for support may be sent to webmaster@heliologue.com.

*sigh* I am sad now. I had a whole review of Ephel Duath and The Mars Volta done and it is gone now. Fiddle sticks.
