I’m going to try Linux again. I’ve done so in the past with limited success, but now I have a nice new computer with plenty of hard drives, so I can successful run both Windows XP and Mandrake 10.0 Community at the same time. Hell, while I’m at it, I might give the newest Windows Longhorn Alpha a try (4053, for the curious).
Quite frankly, I’m don’t I’m going to like Longhorn very much. After all, it took XP a year and a half to be stable enough for me to use (prior to which, I used W2k). Longhorn promises to be even more revolutionary, by which I mean, shitty new features that leak memory, crash the computer, and otherwise make my life difficult. I’d like to be able to use Linux for most things and run Windows on a virtual machine (Wine or VMware, for the curious) for things like gaming. It all depends on how well I take to Linux.
Neither Linux nor Windows, for instance, have a satisfactory 64-bit build. Perhaps much of this has to do with torpidity on the part of OEMs for being stingy with 64-bit drivers. In any case, Windows will unfortunately have the upper hand as it pertains to new driver forthcomingness.
Using Linux scares me a bit, because I’m very comfortable with Windows. I know my way around the configuration, and I can tweak it just how I want it. With Linux, I’m a complete n00b.
Wish me luck.
